Time passed in a blur of restless sleeping and dreary wakefulness. Catha returned at some point to change my dressings and force-feed me a bitter tea, despite my very detailed plans to string her from the rafters by her tail.

“Speaking of… your tail is in bad shape,” she said. “At some point, you’re going to have to let me see it.”

“Everything hurts,” I muttered as I drank the rest of the tea. “My tail can get in line.”

“Tomorrow then. You’ll need a soak to remove the dead scales.”

I ran my hand over my face. Catha poking and prodding at my tail was not my idea of a pleasant activity.

Catha took the tea from me. “The human female is back. She’s waiting to see you.”

I rose to my elbows. “Why didn’t you say?”

She tutted. “You would have not drunk your tea.”

“Catha, I’m not a child,” I replied, though a small part of me reluctantly agreed with her. She hummed in disagreement before gathering her supplies and stepping away from the bed.

“No strenuous activities.”

“I would never,” I replied. Catha clearly thought highly of me if she believed I was able to fuck someone in this condition.

Catha left the room. A moment later, Liesel quietly slid the door open. To my surprise, she entered wearing a turquoise shirt and her standard tight black shorts. Sea glass adorned the neck of the shirt, shimmering in the sun. I recognised it immediately as Erva’s work, Laken’s sister’s husband. They must have visited the sick child today.

Liesel lingered by the doorway. “Hey.”

I cleared my throat. “Hello.” I pointed to a cushion beside my bed. “Sit.”

Liesel walked across the room, her feet padding against the floorboards. She sat cross-legged beside me and folded her hands in her lap. Her long, fair hair was braided into its usual thick rope.

“How do you feel?” she asked.

“Like I just fought a juvenile Ragithe,” I admitted. “How’s Leumeah? Did you give her the cure?”

“We did. It’s going well,” she said. “It’ll be a while until we know if it’s worked, but I’m quietly confident it will.”

“But we don’t have enough.”

Pain crossed her blue eyes. “We don’t. I’m sorry, Maxsym. But as soon as our ship is fixed, we can leave to get more.”

Would it be too late for Neres?

Liesel leaned closer, her eyes roaming down my bandaged chest and before I could stop, I leant forward and notched my nose against her collarbone. I inhaled. She smelt like salt and musk, just like she had the night of D’ailia.

“Maxsym.” Her hand touched my sternum, radiating warmth through my chest. “I thought you had died.”

“Almost,” I admitted. “I’m sorry I left you alone, Liesel.”

She leant against me, the tip of her nose brushing the skin of my fin. “It’s okay. I understood. I ended up finding Yara soon after. We made it back to the Palace at sunrise with the rest of your people.” She hesitated. “What did the pirates look like?”

My memory of the invasion was blurry at best. “They were all different.
